Using Loyalty Points for Holiday Shopping

By: Erika Stevens

This past weekend the Star Tribune featured an article about retailers attracting consumers with their loyalty programs.  The article talks with one consumer who plans his shopping trips around where he has points to use.  This is the perfect example of how retailers want their loyalty programs to work.  Shopping at their business becomes second nature because of the benefits from the loyalty program.

The rest of the article highlights the ways that retailers are utilizing additional incentives to encourage their loyalty program members to shop with them over the holidays.  In last week’s blog post Brent mentioned Best Buy’s Reward Zone program that gave special access to the store for members only shopping.  The article also mentions GameStop launching their PowerUp points program before the holidays and Toys "R" Us giving Rewards "R" Us members exclusive coupons for the new year with their holiday purchases.

An interesting statistic the article cites is 11% of shoppers planned to stretch their budgets by using their points from various loyalty programs for gifts.  (Survey done by Epsilon and LoyaltyOne).  The holidays can be financially trying for people, but if they are able to use points to purchase gifts or earn extra rewards it can help them to choose one business over another.

I certainly used both points and certificates this holiday season, sprinkled with coupons.  Best Buy Reward Zone sent me 2 certificates that I was able to use, but I found that their store didn't have what my exchange student was looking for.  We were able to buy 1 of the 3 items he was looking for (how could they be out of Cannon Rebel camera memory???).  Borders has me coming in every couple days to get my 33% off of 1 item, but this strategy is becoming to labor intensive on my end - good right now but time to start something better.  Wells Fargo Visa allowed me to redeem for Amazon.Com gift certs (which I wanted to use as stocking stuffers)...but they have not arrived yet - missed the stockings - Super big negative there.  Macy's was the really big winner with their combination of Loyalty program giving me certificates, coupons and Wow passes...but I would coach them to make the redemption process at the register less painful.  The poor clerks are always calling over the manager.  Discover Card Loyalty program still proves the easiest to use and get rewards from for me personally, though my security system, Kaspersky, still has some problems with their website and their partner programs.  End Result...Loyalty was King with my Holiday Shopping!

Using Wells Fargo Rewards (after discovering I was enrolled in the program with 6,000 pts already built up!) I was able to find a gift for my mom I was already planning to buy . They offered various models within my point range and the redemption process was simple enough. I made sure to give myself a week for shipping but other than that it was a great money saving option during the holidays!
