People Together-12One of the most common customers in the convenience store setting are millennials. They are always on the go - looking for convenient and quick meals while saving time and money.

With the young adult population’s growing interest in convenience stores, it is important to look at what they’re searching for in their frequented stops. Here are the top 7 things we’ve compiled on what Millennials are most interested in seeing in convenience stores.

1. Health Food Options
NPD Group says in a recent study that millennials, ages 18-34, are the main contributors to an increase in fresh food consumption. With the growing health food craze, they want to know that they are not sacrificing health for convenience. Fresh fruits, nuts, and other quick and easy whole foods to snack on are an attractive choice.

2. Low Prices
Young adults are frugal. They like to save money where they can, so they get excited when they spot a good deal. This is where a good loyalty program can really help drive traffic and increase returning customers. Rewards for being a loyal customer in ways that involve better deals and saving money will encourage them to return.

3. Lunch Options
The desire for low prices and healthier food options are driving millennials to turn from fast food to convenience stores for quick meals. Having a section dedicated to lunch options like salads, sandwiches, and wraps will be imperative for driving lunch hour traffic. Bonus tip: displaying lunch options during breakfast time can encourage shoppers to pick up lunch when they stop in for their morning coffee.

4. Good Atmosphere
If you expect millennials to want to frequent your location for food, fuel, or otherwise, a good atmosphere is expected. Everything from clean bathrooms to a tidy and pleasant shopping area will greatly affect their likelihood to return. Having a few tables and chairs available can also help greatly, because customers won’t have to pay for food at a café or restaurant in order to sit and enjoy their lunch.

5. Earth Friendly Practices
“Biodegradable,” “recyclable,” and “environmentally friendly” are buzzwords in the young adult community. Millennials are concerned about the future of the planet and they want to play their part in taking care of it. Recycled paper and biodegradable plastics are an attractive option for them while styrofoam is almost cringe worthy. Wherever possible, go with earth friendly practices.

6. Friendly Workers
Young shoppers like positivity and good vibes. A friendly and respectful staff on hand is what makes this happen. A smile, a greeting, and a good attitude can go a long way in making millennials feel welcomed and likely to return.

7. Good Coffee
Food and gasoline aren’t the only types of fuel millennials stop for at convenience stores. Many rely on caffeine to give them that extra push through the day, and a good cup of joe will often be the deciding factor on whether or not they make a stop at your location.

By including all (or most) of these items in your convenience store, it will likely become a magnet for millennials. We know millennials are drawn to deals - so are you thinking about implementing a loyalty program to give them what they want?
