Erika’s Lessons in Loyalty Marketing {A Farewell Blog}

Posted by Erika Stevens on Fri, Nov 01, 2013 @ 02:44 PM

After 6 years working at Tecmark I am leaving to pursue a new career opportunity.  In the midst of tying up loose ends and good bye lunches, Cathy said “You have to write a farewell blog!”  Even though I have been blogging for Tecmark for 3 years that hasn’t necessarily made me the next Seth Godin with legions of followers that will be sad to learn about my leaving.  Still, I am glad to have the chance to write a farewell blog looking back on all the lessons I have learned about loyalty marketing.

Back From NACS with More Thoughts on Loyalty

Posted by Erika Stevens on Thu, Oct 17, 2013 @ 04:44 PM

We just returned from 4 days of exhibiting at the NACS show in Atlanta this week.  The show was full of educational sessions and speakers talking about all the issues that those in the c-store space face.  On Monday I attended a session called “Dependable Loyalty” with Bill Hanifan and Paul Candon.  I actually sought this session out because I am a huge fan of Bill’s blog Loyalty Truth.  The session moderator asked a number of questions to Bill and Paul to discuss where they see loyalty going - specifically in the c-store industry.   Most of the session was a case study of Paul’s loyalty program for the Topaz c-stores in Ireland.

This week we have been busy preparing to exhibit at the NACS show starting tomorrow.  The upcoming show is full of educational sessions regarding every aspect of the c-store industry.  I always look forward to hearing about the business from the food trends to the new technologies to the fuel trends.  Now that all of our boxes have arrived at the show site and the travel arrangements are booked and ready I took a minute to finish reading the most recent NACS magazine.

How many times has the employee at a store asked you to enroll in their rewards program while you are rushing to get home?  Signing up while others are in line behind you or getting stuck behind someone who is signing up can be frustrating and turn customers off from joining a rewards program.  Given my experience in the loyalty industry as well as my experience as a customer I put together some tips for faster and easier enrollment in your rewards program.  If you simplify the enrollment process you will increase the number of customers that participate in your rewards program.

Fresh Perks Rewards Program Review

Posted by Erika Stevens on Wed, Sep 25, 2013 @ 02:15 PM

Earlier this year Roundy’s grocery stores replaced their Fuel Perks rewards program with the Fresh Perks rewards program.  Many consumers were used to and liked the fuel discount program.  Grocery store rewards programs are often a coalition with a c-store that gives you a discount on gas (Cathy posted about it here).  With the Fresh Perks program Roundy’s stores focused on rewarding their consumers for purchasing at their stores.  The rewards program is still pretty new as it debuted in April.

Rewards Program Evolution - Best Buy

Posted by Erika Stevens on Wed, Sep 18, 2013 @ 02:37 PM

It’s no secret that Best Buy has had a rough couple of years.  The company reported losses for all of 2012 and has just turned the corner into profitability in August 2013.  The company has shared its strategy including a focus on being price competitive, online shopping and putting more effort into mobile stores.  Even though things have been rough in the past, they have stayed committed to their loyalty program -  Rewards Zone.  This commitment has helped them grow their member base to approximately 40 million active members.

Are C-Store Rewards Programs Worth It?

Posted by Erika Stevens on Wed, Sep 11, 2013 @ 01:33 PM

Recently I came across an article titled with the question “Convenience Store Loyalty on the Skids?”  The article points to data from Colloquy’s Loyalty Census that reports on consumer participation in loyalty programs across all verticals.  In 2012 25.3 million consumers participated in c-store rewards programs showing a decrease of 21% from 2010 and 34% from 2006.

Will Cartwheel by Target Increase Customer Loyalty?

Posted by Erika Stevens on Fri, Sep 06, 2013 @ 12:53 PM

Even though I try to stay on top of all marketing news occasionally I miss something.  That is my excuse for just now downloading the Target Cartwheel app on my phone.  Even though I have been a loyal Target shopper my entire life I really haven’t ever paid attention to their apps, coupons or other marketing.  Over the past few months I have heard rumblings of Cartwheel and even seen news about friends using it but I didn’t pay attention until in a meeting someone mentioned it’s basically a rewards program that doesn’t call itself a rewards program.  Of course Target has its REDcard loyalty program but that is only available for customers using the credit card.  For me the idea of being rewarded for my loyalty to Target sold me on downloading the app immediately.

Connect with Your Customers on Instagram

Posted by Erika Stevens on Fri, Aug 30, 2013 @ 10:39 AM

I have a confession to make.  Instagram is by far my favorite social network.  For those who don’t know, Instagram is a photo and (recently added) video sharing app and website.  Users upload photos, can apply filters if they would like and post for their followers.  Instagram has been around since 2010 and gained a lot of popularity when it was acquired by Facebook in April 2012.
